Sports Nutrition

The Urbane Cyclist offers sports nutrition counseling through co-owner Clara Gordon. Clara earned her Bachelor’s in Biology from Colby College and Masters of Nutrition from Boston University. She is a nationally certified Registered Dietitian and Massachusetts Licensed Dietitian/Nutritionist. She completed her elective rotations with the head dietitian of the US Ski and Snowboard team in Park City, Utah. Clara also works as an inpatient Clinical Dietitian within the Northeast Hospital system.

Clara’s interest in nutrition began in tandem with the start of her road cycling career in college. At the time, she was a vegetarian and earned a quick course in the nutritional density of a plant-based diet vs. one that might also include animal-based foods for endurance pursuits. Many years and an MS later, Clara advocates for a balanced diet that helps you maintain a healthy body weight and perform optimally in your chosen athletic activity.

Clara’s experience with athletes of many ages and abilities guides her distinct approach for each client. After taking into account each athlete's baseline fitness and nutritional habits, Clara and the athlete co-create appropriate nutritional goals and develop sound, practical strategies for better health and enhanced athletic performance.

Sports nutrition possesses the potential to help clients:
  • Lose weight
  • Gain muscle mass
  • Fuel optimally for training
  • Consume adequate calories and fluid to sustain racing efforts
  • Learn appropriate meal and snack timing
  • Aid muscle recovery
  • Plan delicious, balanced meals around daily life and training
  • Orchestrate nutritious food while traveling

Nutrition counseling sessions occur on a one-to-one basis across three, individualized sessions including an initial consultation, grocery store field trip, and follow up office visit to focus on the most salient areas for nutritional improvement. All sessions revolve around the individual athlete and their requirements, challenges, and strengths.

Clara is also available for speaking engagements for high school and college athletic teams, adult recreational teams, or any other groups that may benefit from an insightful overview of nutrition for athletes.
